The city of Vienna around 1900 basked in a golden era of prosperity. Below the surface, social and political tensions acted as a crucible for an extraordinary explosion of new ideas in painting, architecture and the decorative arts, music, literature, and philosophy. The effects of this intense period of super-abundance in art and culture were far-reaching. We will examine this exciting, and at times problematic period leading to the first World War, through the work of famous and lesser-known artists in their search for artistic freedoms through the founding of the Vienna Secession and the Wiener Werkstätte, modelled on the Arts and Crafts movement.
