Guided by V&A curators, leading metalworkers, and world-class experts, each session invites you to engage with the richness of V&A’s collections and with gold artefacts of global significance.  Speakers include historians Professor Peter Oakley and Beatriz Chadour-Sampson, and artist jewellers Emefa Cole and Ute Decker.

On this online art history course, learn from our world-class experts wherever you are, whenever suits you: watch lectures live or view the recording later in your own time. You can experience the full breadth and depth of the V&A's collections with 12 hours of study over 6 weeks. Learn at your own pace: lecture recordings and study materials, lecture notes, copies of the presentations, and additional study materials are available in our secure Microsoft Teams environment for 6 weeks after the course ends, so you'll never miss a thing. And finally, join the conversation: share your perspective with your fellow students, and support each other in your further enquiries outside of class time.

Clementine is an arts programmer, curator and historian specialising in European material culture and craft from 1650-now. Previous to her role in V&A Academy, she was Assistant Curator of the V&A’s modern and contemporary metalwork collections, of the Rosalinde & Arthur Gilbert Collection, and Curator of the Chitra Collection.

Course overview

This history of gold course will explore its sociocultural relevance as emblem of wealth, power, and allure across centuries and around the globe. From ancient treasures to contemporary jewellery, global trade networks to innovations in craftsmanship, we’ll delve into how gold as a material has shaped economies, cultures, and an extraordinary variety of artistic expression. Guided by V&A curators, leading metalworkers, and world-class experts, each session invites you to engage with the richness of V&A’s collections and with gold artefacts of global significance. 

Guest speakers include jewellers Emefa Cole and Ute Decker, historians Professor Peter Oakley and V&A curator Alice Minter will provide unique insights into gold's influence on art and design, from its role in religious artefacts to fashion. You will connect with a vibrant community of fellow learners to deepen your understanding and exchange perspectives on this enduringly significant metal.
