Course overview

This course will explore what fresco has meant and means for cultures and artists for over 4,000 years. You will examine the various styles adopted and adapted by some of the great fresco masters of the Renaissance. Consider the universality of fresco in time and place. At about the same time early Christians were painting frescoes in cave churches in Anatolia, Buddhist monks were decorating similar shrines in India; Michelangelo’s frescoes on the Sistine Chapel ceiling have a direct correlation in technique and purpose with the wall paintings of Pompeii.
