The Charterhouse has been living the nation’s history since 1348. Founded as a monastery of the Carthusian order in 1372, the site then became a grand Tudor mansion inhabited by the nobility of the day. In 1611 it was bought by Thomas Sutton who established the largest charitable foundation in seventeenth-century Europe, founding a school and an almshouse. In early 2017 the Charterhouse is opening its door to the public for the very first time. Come and discover more at a behind the scenes tour led by one of the resident Brothers, followed by refreshments in the Old Library.
