Lunchtime Lecture: Musical Theatre- The Oxford Handbook of the Global Stage Musical photo
Join us for a panel discussion inspired by The Oxford Handbook of the Global Stage Musical. The joint editors, musical theatre scholars Dr Olaf Jubin and Professor Robert Gordon, will lead a conversation on issues arising from this important new collection of 33 essays. Topics will include the transcultural spread of a new kind of globalized stage musical introduced by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Cameron Mackintosh, later imitated by Disney; problems of translation/adaptation from one culture to another; as well as the growth of large-scale musical theatre industries in German-language theatres, South Korea, Japan, South Africa, China, Mexico and Brazil. Another factor to be considered is the need for musicals to be more inclusive in choice of subject matter, authors, performers and creatives.

The panel will include musical theatre scholars Dr Olaf Jubin and Professor Robert Gordon; playwright and director Richard Shannon, musical theatre and opera expert Dr John Snelson and Dr Pamela Karantonis, Head of the Theatre and Performance Department at Goldsmiths, University of London.
