Iran’s 1960s and 70s saw the emergence of both a vibrant arts scene and the grassroots film movement which would later become known as the Iranian New Wave. Three documentary films produced by two prominent members of that movement reflect the vitality and importance of Iran’s modern art scene at the time:
Boom-e Simin (The Land of Silver, Kamran Shirdel, 1965) introduces Iran’s art of silversmithing.
Ars Poetica (Khosrow Sinai, 1967) explores the work of artist Jazeh Tabatabai.
The Modern Art of Iran (Khosrow Sinai, 1977) follows the development of modern art in Iran, culminating with the opening of the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art in 1977.
This screening also features a brief video introduction by curator Ali Bakhtiari, produced exclusively for the event. The screening has been curated in collaboration with Ehsan Khoshbakht (curator, co-director of Il Cinema Ritrovato).
