Women Artists of the V&A (In-person)

This study day will highlight the work of historic female artists who worked as painters and draughtspersons from the early modern period to the late twentieth century. Though many were famous during their lifetime, their work has (until recently) often been relegated to the fringes of art history. The day will examine both the context of artists’ individual practice through a series of in-depth case studies as well as discuss the role of curatorial practice for the visibility and interpretation of women artists today. Case studies, led by V&A curators, will include media such as the portrait miniature, and artists including Angelica Kauffman and Vanessa Bell.
