As part of the V&A's annual Performance Festival, Bernard Lockett will provide an assessment and overview of Gilbert and Sullivan; the musicality and precise genre of the works as part of our country’s theatrical heritage and their influence on to-day’s musical theatre.
This talk will consider the vast amount of social and political satire within the shows and explore Gilbert & Sullivan's world-wide popularity in the Twenty First Century and its modern production values.
Bernard Lockett is a a life-long enthusiast of Gilbert & Sullivan with special interest in the background to the works, their satire and precise theatrical genre. As an author, two of his books are about Gilbert & Sullivan. Since 2010 I have been a Trustee of the International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival – www,gsfestivals.org – and involved with the National Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company that headlines the Festival annually at the Buxton Opera House and also in Malvern.
