Course overview

Over the course of the 20th Century the world of design experienced revolutionary change. This was particularly true of interior design, which evolved from a series of disparate artisanal trades and became a polished profession in its own right. At the same time, this fresh discipline became a barometer of changing tastes and decorative styles, embracing Art Nouveau and Art Deco before shifting into modernism and the playful glories of the mid-century modern look. 20th Century Iconic Interiors charts this one hundred year journey through the stories of some of the most influential houses and spaces of the era.

Spanning all parts of the world and covering a broad spectrum of styles and looks, this course builds over eight weeks into a rounded survey of the most fascinating and important spaces ever seen. From early delights such as Edith Wharton’s The Mount in New England or Duncan Grant and Vanessa Bell’s Charleston in East Sussex, the story grows through the work of masters such as Piero Fornasetti, Madeleine Castaing, David Hicks, Terence Conran and Albert Hadley.
