An Evening with Catherine and Fenton Bailey and Susie Cave (Livestream)

Catherine and Fenton Bailey and Susie Cave will join Jo Ellison, Deputy Editor of FT Weekend and Editor of FT How To Spend It, for a fascinating conversation about 1980s fashion, shooting with Bailey and the making of David Bailey. 1980s Fashion on the occasion of its release.

 

In this new TASCHEN book, we see Bailey’s unique take on the era of excess. Featuring couture, catwalk, and ready-to-wear collections from the decade’s most influential designers, including Azzedine Alaïa, Comme des Garçons, Guy Laroche, Missoni, and Stephen Jones, through Bailey’s lens, the 1980s come to life as a period of high glamour, exaggerated style, and boldness—characterised by vibrant colours, power dressing, and extravagant hairstyles.

 

The book provides a visual history of the 1980s fashion revolution, where traditional hierarchies of taste were upended, and fun and sensuality were reintroduced to the runway. It captures the jewellery sparkling, the silks shimmering, and the models—such as Catherine Bailey, Jerry Hall, Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Grace Jones, and Princess Diana—at their most playful and provocative.
