Medieval books were often decorated with colours and gold, the dance of light on gold leaf ‘illuminating’ the text. During this practical workshop you will learn how the metal leaf and pigments were applied to the page and have the chance to create your own small illuminated design – a letter or bestiary image. The day will start with the creation of a test piece, where you will have the opportunity to experiment with a variety of traditional and modern ‘sizes’ – the glues that are used to adhere the gold leaf. You will then go on to gild and paint a more complex design. There will be a choice of images, both medieval and contemporary, to copy or trace, but creativity is welcomed.
