Abiola Onabule leads this interactive workshop introducing indigo dyeing techniques used to create adire, patterned cloth made by Yoruba dyers in South Western Nigeria.

Note: This workshop has now sold out. To add your name to the waiting list, please email courses@vam.ac.uk. To sign up for the V&A Academy mailing list, visit vam.ac.uk/academy

Each piece of adire tells a story; Abiola will share some of these meanings using examples from both her own collection and the V&A archives, before showing you how to create your own design using resist dye techniques. As well as learning the practical techniques, you will have the opportunity to learn more about Nigerian textile heritage discussing ideas around cultural narratives woven within cloth.

Part of London Craft Week

Abiola Onabule is a London-based fashion designer with a master’s degree in womenswear from Central Saint Martins. Celebrating form through silhouette, abstracting, and cutting techniques, she is interested in the crafts and practices of Nigerian textile culture, personal narratives and processes of making as ‘acts of care’.
