Dr Christine Checinska is the V&A’s inaugural Senior Curator of African and African Diaspora Fashion and Lead Curator of the Africa Fashion exhibition. Elisabeth Murray is the Project Curator of the Africa Fashion exhibition and a contributor to the accompanying publication.

Course overview

From Virgil Abloh to Ib Kamara and Sindiso Khumalo, Global Africa’s fashion creatives are shifting the landscape of fashion. Inspired by Africa Fashion, this course will explore the fashioning of Global Africa 1900-now. Each week historians, cultural critics and practitioners will bring to life the creativity and impact of African fashions and textiles, taking a deep dive into the V&A collection and the world of key Global Africa fashion creatives.

Stories from objects and thematic lectures will delve into independence fashions, gender, and representation, setting African fashions into the context of the global fashion scene.
