Join British photographer Mark Neville in conversation with Dr Marta Weiss, Senior Curator of Photography, to discuss his photography and his campaign to gather international support for Ukraine. PLEASE NOTE: if you haven't received the event link yet please contact courses@vam.ac.uk
Neville began photographing the people and places of Ukraine in 2015 and moved to Kyiv in 2020. His book ‘Stop Tanks With Books’ offers a glimpse of life in Ukraine over the past six years, during the simmering conflict sparked by Russia’s invasion of eastern and southern parts of the country in 2014. While the strain of living with constant threat is more immediately evident in some photographs than others, the series portrays the humanity and resilience of a population now under direct attack.
Published just four days before the current war began, the book was distributed free to policy makers, politicians and activists, in order to focus international attention on the crisis in Ukraine. A selection of the photographs is presented in the display ‘Ukraine In Focus’, at the V&A until 29 August: https://www.vam.ac.uk/event/GMvKkYd6wN/ukraine-in-focus
