In 1434, Cosimo de Medici returned to Florence from exile as ‘de facto’ ruler, having been banished by the city and the powerful Albizzi family. With his vast wealth as a banker, knowledge of the classical world, patronage of the creative local artistic talent, he commissioned artwork and buildings that created powerful visual symbols of his power and rule as a virtuous Florentine citizen.
Discover with V&A guide Sandy Hawkins, the religious and secular art Cosimo and his successors commissioned as propaganda to create an identity for themselves as just, moral and virtuous leaders whilst upholding Florentine civic and religious values.
