In this beginners' workshop, you will design and create your own ring, using jewellers wax ready to be cast using the ‘lost wax casting’ technique. Throughout the day jewellery designer Ellis Mhairi Cameron will guide you through each step of the process, from drawing to modelling to final wax.
This event is part of London Craft Week
Carving in wax is a fun and three-dimensional way of working, giving you endless options to design whatever style of ring you have in mind. This technique allows you to create something 3D, abstract, classic, chunky, geometric or organic, so you can let your imagination run wild. We’ll begin with a short introduction to the lost wax process and its uses. Ellis will share tips and tricks on how to design a comfortable ring, as well as show you various techniques and tools that can be used.
You will then start your ring journey with a visit to the jewellery gallery at the V&A South Kensington to look at examples in the collection, before sketching out your ring and beginning to carve your wax. Once you’re happy with your finished carving, Ellis will show you how to prepare it for casting. After the workshop, your wax-carved ring will be cast, finished and polished by Ellis using 100% recycled silver. You will be contacted once it’s ready for collection or it can be posted for a small fee.
