From Bollywood to Gujarati Folk to Kathak, Holborn Community Association and Akademi celebrate the joy of dance with a modern take on South Asian dance styles
Piece 1: Taarefon se
A short semiclassical Bollywood piece which introduces the dancers. Cheeky and romantic, the song in this piece describes someone who is unfazed by ‘sweet nothings’. The dancers showcase how elements of Kathak can be incorporated into the eclectic world of Bollywood dance.
Piece 2: Nomad
A modern take on the classical Indian art form, Kathak, a style recognised by its intricate details, storytelling and lines. This piece moves through both the technical and expressional aspects of Kathak, exploring the beauty of nature in dance, from the charm of the peacock to the grace of the elephant.
Piece 3: Shubhaarambh
This celebratory piece is a Gujarati folk dance known as Garba. The strong beats, claps, twists and turns make this style joyful to watch and fun to dance. This style is enjoyed in communities across India and the diaspora, where young and old dance together in celebration.
Performances are at 14.00 and 16.00.
