Contemporary African fashion, music forms and performance genres, after years of being overlooked by the Global North, are finally dominating magazine spreads and filling social media feeds. In 1960, Ghana’s first prime minister Dr Kwame Nkrumah proclaimed, “We face neither East nor West: we face forward.”
Manifesting this guiding principle, this Friday Late will explore how young creatives of African and diaspora heritage are imagining the future, producing works that are as diverse as the continent itself whilst embodying a spirit of independence. Showcasing innovation from across Africa that is rooted in fashion but extends to and intersects with all forms of creativity and cultural expression, this evening will present a richness of Global African perspectives.
All events are free and places are designated on a first-come, first-served basis unless stated otherwise.
All our exhibitions will be open at Friday Late – book your tickets in advance. Some galleries may be closed.
Filming and photography will take place at this event. If you have any access requirements, please let us know in advance by emailing disability@vam.ac.uk
