This walk will explore Hampstead, one of London’s most famous quarters. Hampstead has long been known for its fascinating mix of architectural styles and periods as well as for its creative residents. Explore a selection intriguing properties and their fascinating stories. A “nest of gentle artists” was the way in which the influential art critic Herbert Reade memorably described Hampstead in the 1930s.  But this is only part of the story of this corner of London which has for centuries attracted an impressive array of creative people to its leafy streets and cosy village atmosphere. Architects, artists, writers, actors and musicians are amongst the many who have been drawn to its lively atmosphere and proximity to one of the green jewels of London, Hampstead Heath.

Christine is an art and design historian, with a particular interest in the home, its furnishings and garden from the late nineteenth century onwards. Christine was Deputy Director of the Geffrye Museum, London (now called the Museum of the Home) for 21 years and was for decades a resident of north London and frequent walker on Hampstead Heath.

I loved it all! An excellent walk with so much interesting information, hearing about the people that lived in the area and what their work and lives involved. Previous Walking tour attendee

Course overview

This walk will focus on a selection of houses of differing age and appearance, from elegant Regency terrace to Victorian ‘piles’ and Modernist icons. Buildings by twentieth-century architects including Erno Goldfinger and Welles Coates will be considered alongside older ones dating from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. We will also discuss a few of the notable residents of Hampstead including fine artists siblings Richard and Hilda Carline, Paul Nash, Barbara Hepworth and Ben Nicholson, Kate Greenaway and John Constable. Émigrés who lived in Hampstead, such as Walter Gropius, Marcel Breuer and Sigmund Freud, will also be discussed, as will some of the writers and actors who have made this green and visually stimulating corner of London their home.
