Ava Grauls Union Miniere du Haut Katanga 2024 Painting

Join Ava Grauls (RCA graduate) as she delves into the relationships between geography, personal memories and identity formation. Her artistic practice examines the profound impact of geological maps, propagated histories and national borders on cultural identity.

From apartheid history textbooks to Brexit, Grauls encourages us to reflect on the complexities of a national identity within our collective memory. The talk follows a series of artworks that explore these dialogues, debating the overarching myths of statehood against the realities of resources in geopolitics.

Ava Grauls (b. 1982) is a South African/Belgian artist based in London. Her work has been collected by the Royal Scottish Academy, and she has previously been the recipient of the David Michie Travel Award and the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation Grant. Grauls has exhibited internationally, including Japan and Portugal.
