The V&A holds one of the finest collections of Qing Ceramics in the world, prized for their technological excellence and artistic innovation. From temple vases and ritual vessels to ornamental flasks and decorative articles, ceramics can be seen in all shapes and forms, illustrating the diversity of decorative influences which flourished during the Qing dynasty.
Explore first hand the treasures of the V&A under the expert guidance of museum specialists, through a combination of lectures, gallery visits and handling sessions. Body and glaze will be explained and explored, highlighting why Qing ceramics were so favoured when they first arrived in the West and continued to be so today.
V&A Academy Unlocked days invite you behind the scenes, bringing you face-to-face with the V&A's extraordinary collections.
This study day begins with a lecture from Dr Helen Glaister. This is followed by a hands-on study session of ceramics with Dr Helen Glaister and a guided tour by Independent Lecturer, Anne Haworth exploring highlights of the V&A’s collections on display.
Dr Helen Glaister is an art historian specialising in Chinese Ceramics and Decorative Arts. Helen has been Course Director since 2006 and previously worked at the British Museum. She has lectured for Birkbeck College, the British Library and is Senior Teaching Fellow at SOAS, University of London.
I enjoyed all of the sessions... It was amazing to see these fabulous items up close. Previous Unlocked Study Day attendee
