In celebration of the 400th anniversary of Monteverdi’s operatic scena Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda (The Combat of Tancredi and Clorinda), director Fabio Cherstich and choreographer Philippe Kratz have reconceived the piece, which translates the struggle between a man and a woman fatally bound by love and death into a powerful contemporary dance performance.

Aligning with the composer’s original vision, this contemporary interpretation of a 'sacred text' of Italy’s cultural heritage combines physical action, instrumentation and voices.

Produced by Centro Coreografico Nazionale/Aterballetto

The performance will happen at 11:00 and 13:00

The CCN/Aterballetto, Italy’s first National Choreographic Center since 2022, is a hub of creativity and innovation for contemporary dance, based in Reggio Emilia, in Northern Italy. Founded around the Aterballetto company—established in 1977 and now composed of 16 dancers engaged in productions by internationally renowned choreographers and the reinterpretation of a curated repertoire—the CCN/Aterballetto embraces a diversity of styles and languages. Cosmopolitan, curious, and dynamic, its productions are acclaimed in major theaters and festivals in Italy and worldwide.

Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda was conceived in 2024 as a dance and live music project for the promotion of Italian cultural heritage, commissioned and coordinated by the Direzione Generale Musei (Directorate General for Museums), curated by the Musei Nazionali di Perugia – Direzione Regionale Musei Nazionali Umbria (National Museums of Perugia – Regional Directorate for National Museums of Umbria), and CCN / Aterballetto, with the support of the Direzione Generale Spettacolo dal vivo (Directorate General for Live Performance).
