Tropical Modernism: Architecture and Independence
Be guided through a series of simple hands-on activities inspired by architecture and designs on display in our latest exhibition, Tropical Modern. The session will inspire play, creativity, experimentation and participation.
Students will make-along with architects from Matt+Fiona to design their own unique piece of architecture, influenced by the bold geometries of the Modernist buildings of West Africa and India in the 1960s and 70s. We’ll explore how materials, light and shape can create spaces that respond to local climate and identity, through playful hands-on making.
Tropical Modernism was an architectural style developed in the hot, humid conditions of West Africa in the 1940s. After independence, India and Ghana adopted the style as a symbol of modernity and progressiveness, distinct from colonial culture.
This webinar will be streamed live to multiple schools and feature an opportunity for students and teachers to find out more about what it is like to be an architect.
To make-along with this webinar, students will need some simple materials. You will be sent full details after your register for the event.
Please note – teachers must remain with their students at all times during the session. Please ensure that children are supervised carefully during the making activity.
