Learn the basics of hand building in this online beginner's ceramics course. Over six weeks, former V&A Artist in Residence and Ceramicist Florence Dwyer will provide expert tuition in the fundamentals of hand-built ceramics. Using only your hands, some basic tools and air-drying clay, Florence will show you how to create forms inspired by the V&A South Kensington and V&A Wedgwood Collection.

Florence Dwyer is an artist who currently lives and works in Glasgow, Scotland where she graduated from The Glasgow School of Art in 2014. Florence was V&A x Design Lab Nation Artist in Residence in 2022 – 2023, researching across the collections at V&A South Kensington and V&A Wedgwood Collection.

Course overview

Develop your skills with expert tuition from V&A South Kensington, V&A Wedgwood Collection and World of Wedgwood in this six-week innovative online beginners ceramics course. Each week ceramicist Florence Dwyer will teach you a different technique, from slab building, to mould making, casting and sculpting, using the vast V&A Collections as inspiration. Alongside developing your skills, you'll gain creative confidence as we break down each process step-by-step in a supportive online environment. With our weekly Spotlight Sessions, you will delve deeper into the history and background of the collection, with talks from V&A South Kensington, V&A Wedgwood Collection and World of Wedgwood experts.  

Note: There are two weekly tutorial slots available. Click ‘Book Now’ to book the Monday evening session. Alternatively, you can book the Monday afternoon session via the Online Courses page. Materials are not included. We anticipate that the cost of materials for this course will be between £40 - £80 depending on the materials and equipment you choose. You will receive a list of materials to purchase before the start of the course.
