The years between 300 and 800 were characterised by upheaval and uncertainty, as Christianity gradually replaced pagan belief, the Roman Empire disintegrated, and a new order emerged in Western Europe. Despite these changes, craftsmen, working in metropolitan centres like Rome, Alexandria, and Constantinople, continued to produce high quality, artefacts for wealthy patrons.
This day will focus on surviving luxury products made during this volatile period, housed today in the V&A, and other London collections. Join us for a V&A curator-led object-handling session to experience luxury objects up close. Discover highlights of the V&A’s Medieval & Renaissance collection through a gallery tour led by V&A Academy course director Dr Sally Dormer. Enjoy a lecture by Sally to find out about Early Medieval luxury arts in London collections including the V&A’s and others.
This Unlocked study day is now sold out, please email courses@vam.ac.uk if you wish to be added to the waiting list for this event, including the event title and date.
This Unlocked study day is designed to complement the 12-week online course ‘From Pagan to Christian: The Arts of Medieval Europe 300-800’ led by Dr Sally Dormer but you do not need to be enrolled on any online course to join an 'Unlocked' event.
Dr Sally Dormer is a specialist medieval art historian and lecturer, with an M.A. in Medieval Art History and Ph.D. on Medieval manuscript illumination from the Courtauld Institute, University of London.
