Mughal miniature paintings often feature exquisite, jewel-like carpets with intricate floral and animal designs. During the period 1560-1660 some of the best and most opulent carpets were woven in India, particularly in Agra and Lahore. Although, initially their designs were influenced by Persian carpets, soon a distinctive Indian style developed depicting exuberant animals and naturalistic floral motifs.
This tour will focus on Mughal and Persian carpets in the museum’s permanent collection, examining their similarities and differences, and the stories of their journeys to the West. The tour will end with William Morris' famous Bullerswood Carpet and a discussion around the extent to which these carpets influenced Western designers such as Morris.
Tour end times are approximate and may vary to what is shown. Optional light refreshments will be served after the tour in the Members' Room.
