Examine the design and craftsmanship that made Christian Dior the leading couturier of his generation. This course will contextualise his achievements and his legacy, with lectures from V&A curators, and from experts on the House of Dior. The weekend will also include a special visit to the V&A Prints and Drawings collection to view Dior publicity material, and a live demonstration of couture embroidery techniques.
Dr Clare Rose is an expert on the history of fashion who frequently lectures at the V&A, and is the Senior Lecturer in Contextual Studies at the Royal School of Needlework. She has published many books and articles, and her training as a museum curator means she has a detailed understanding of the techniques that produce innovative garments.
I have taken many Weekend Courses at the V&A and I come away feeling inspired, stimulated by the facts, and wishing to know even more. Previous Course Student
Christian Dior's work was known for its combination of meticulous cut and lavish surface detailing, and for a strategic use of promotion. This study weekend will uncover the discipline and the working relationships that helped to establish Dior as the foremost designer of his generation, and that laid the foundations for the lasting success of the House of Dior after the untimely death of its founder. You will learn about Dior's careful attention to details such as shoes and accessories, view original documents at close quarters, and hear from people who have worked for Dior.
