This study day invites you to immerse yourself in textiles, to look at European and Indonesian textiles, both exhibiting a cornucopia of historical textile techniques ranging from medieval Southeast Asian material cultures to 15th century Flemish tapestry.
V&A Academy Unlocked days invite you behind the scenes, bringing you face-to-face with the V&A's extraordinary collections.
This study day begins with a lecture from Dr Lesley Pullen who explores the evidence of textiles on Medieval Javanese sculpture. This is followed by a hands-on study session of textiles from Lesley's private collection providing a rare opportunity to become more familiar with the Indonesian songket, batik and ikat techniques, and by a guided tour by Jennifer Wearden exploring highlights of the V&A’s textiles collections on display in the Medieval and Renaissance gallery. This Unlocked study day is now sold out, please email courses@vam.ac.uk if you wish to be added to the waiting list for this event, including the event title and date.
This Unlocked study day is designed to complement the 12-week online autumn term course ‘Textiles: Prehistory to 1700’ led by Jennifer Wearden but you do not need to be enrolled on any online course to join an ‘Unlocked’ event.
This course is now sold out.In the 28 years Jennifer worked with the Museum’s Textile Collection she curated a V&A exhibition called The European Art of Textiles and authored/co-authored several V&A publications including Samplers, Ottoman Embroidery, Oriental Carpets and Iranian Textiles. More recently, she has been delivering courses on the history of textiles and dress.
I enjoyed all of the sessions... It was amazing to see these fabulous items up close. Previous Unlocked Study Day attendee
