Following the V&A’s acquisition of Fred Astaire’s tailcoat worn in the 1937 film Shall We Dance, join us for an exclusive visit to the legendary Savile Row institution Anderson & Sheppard, bespoke tailors since 1906. A regular customer at Anderson & Sheppard, Astaire would perform steps in front of a full-length mirror and have a series of seams sewn into the jacket to ensure it was flexible enough for the suit to stay perfectly in line with his body as he danced. The tailors hold the Royal Warrant for HRH The Prince of Wales and have dressed many of the world’s most elegant and famous men, including actors Gary Cooper, Laurence Olivier and Rudolph Valentino. The visit includes selected highlights from the firm’s archives and demonstrations by expert cutters and tailors in the Old Burlington Street workrooms.
