The first of the V&A's events to celebrate Asian Art in London 2017, Malcolm unpicks the politics of ink under Mao, in a 1962 landscape by modern master Fu Baoshi (1904-1965). He explores the techniques used by the late 18th-early 19th century painter Fang Mei to depict plum blossoms falling by moonlight. He will also examine the lives of palace women in the final years of imperial rule, looking at Dowager Empress Cixi’s (1835-1908) patronage of female painters.
