Hyperreal glass sculpture: ASMR

Immerse yourself in the digital realm with Curator Natalie Kane as she handles an incredibly satisfying and soothing sculpture – a smooth glass pillow, complete with a fuzzy flock ball nestled perfectly on top.

What is ASMR?

ASMR stands for autonomous sensory meridian response – a pleasant tingling sensation beginning on the scalp and moving down the neck, which is triggered by a delicate or satisfying auditory or visual experience.

What is born digital?

Born digital objects are things that originate digitally, rather than physically.

Designed by artist Lucy Hardcastle, this hyperreal sculpture is titled Pillow II. Made by glassblower Ben Cobb, the glass pillow is accompanied by computer-generated data created using Cinema 4D software, and a set of photographs taken by Gareth Williams, that make it appear almost too good to be true. Watch as we explore ideas of digital comfort and sensory satisfaction, and find out what's involved in creating an object as satisfying as this.
