Detail from Kaleidoscope, a portfolio of Art Deco patterns for textiles by M.P. Verneuil

Maurice Pillard Verneuil

Visionary Art Deco designer Maurice Pillard (M.P.) Verneuil is best known for his portfolio of vividly coloured prints and patterns, 'Kaléidoscope, ornements abstraits; quatre-vingt-sept motifs en vingt planches' (1926). Pattern books such as this grew in popularity in the nineteenth century, as the status of design and the applied arts rose. The luxurious and opulent styles of 'Kaléidoscope' continue to be a source of inspiration for designers today.
