Pierre Balmain (1914-82), Christian Dior (1905-57), and Jean Patou (1887-1936) dresses

Pen and ink fashion sketch by Marcel Fromenti (1886-1969)

France, 20th century

The model on the left is in a draped and pleated dark crepe dress by Patou which is probably designed by Marc Bohan. It has with sweetheart neckline. In the middle, a model carrying a rolled parasol in a light-coloured printed silk pencil-skirted sheath is wearing a dress by Dior. On the right is a Balmain dress with a full, densely pleated skirt and wrap-over bodice with short sleeves. All models wear elbow-length gloves and very large, wide-brimmed hats.

This drawing was used for illustration in The Lady magazine in 1953 and 1954.

Custom printed on 300gsm textured fine art paper.

About the artist

Marcel Fromenti

Marcel Fromenti (1886-1969) was the main artist for The Lady's fashion articles. He illustrated fashion developments of their day in simple, accessible terms that contributed greatly to The Lady's popularity with its readers. The glamorous women in his drawings modelled both couture and high-end ready-to-wear garments with equal panache and elegance. The Lady is a weekly magazine for women published since 1885.
