About the artist

Jules Goury

Jules Goury (1803-34) was a French architect born in Landerneau, France. He met Owen Jones (1809-74) the well-known British architect and designer in Greece. Both shared their new found interest in Islamic patterns and architecture, and continued their travels to Egypt, Turkey and Spain together. On a visit to the Alhambra in 1834, the two men decided to conduct an exhaustive study to illustrate the intricate geometric patterns and shapes of the palace’s Moorish decorative ornaments. They spent six months painting and drawing every intricate detail before Goury died in 1834 of cholera. The Grammar of Ornament is the resulting publication from their work together.
