In the 16th and 17th centuries, the Mughal court employed some of the finest artisans from across south and central Asia to produce lavish jewellery and exquisite painting and calligraphy. The winter 2024 issue of V&A Magazine explores this sumptuous legacy and the international links that brought trade and cultural influences to the Indian subcontinent.

Thousands of miles to the west, in the forests of northern Europe, craftspeople developed an artistic and economic powerhouse that rivalled the great glassmakers of Venice. Their colourful creations are explored in shimmering still-life photography by London studio Baker & Evans.

Elsewhere, the critic Orit Gat traces the history of digital art back to the 1950s, the Jameel Prize for Islamic art celebrates new media with works in film, photography and audio, and Susie Boyt and Helen Barrett review fashion and design titles to look out for this season.

About the exhibition
Emperor Jahangir was among the most famous and influencial rulers during the Golden Age of the Mughal Empire in India

The Great Mughals: Art, Architecture and Opulence

This Autumn's major exhibition at V&A South Kensington celebrates the extraordinary creative output and internationalist culture of the Golden Age of the Mughal Court (c.1560 – 1660) during the reigns of its most famous emperors: Akbar, Jahangir and Shah Jahan. Hindu and Muslim artists and craftsmen from the northern regions of the Indian subcontinent worked with Iranian masters in the royal workshops. Their very different traditions were combined to produce a radically new, and rapidly evolving style of art for the court.
