Did someone say history time?! The Mughal empire was one of the most powerful and longest ruling empires in India, running from 1526 – 1858! One of the Emperors, Akbar, established creative workshops where artists and craft makers were employed to make beautiful, luxurious items for the court, such as tapestries and bejewelled paintings of everyday life scenes, nature, flowers and animals.
Many Mughal artists painted animals as without the invention of photography, painting was a way to show what a turkey looked like, for example. Animals carried symbolic meaning to the Mughals and were often given as gifts – like zebras! But remember: a zebra is life, not just for Christmas!
