Upstart: What the Hat?! - Live Podcast

Wednesday 6 November

Come along and be a live studio audience for the pilot episode of the YPC podcast!

Bethan and Leyla from our very own Young People's Collective discuss tactics, strategies, hopes and dreams with Dundee grassroots heavyweights Volk Gallery and City Flower Garden Studio.

The pilot episode of the podcast has been co-programmed by a committee of young people, who have used the theme of ‘Future Thinking’ to share tactics, demystify creative careers and imagine alternatives models for the future of the creative sector.

Future episodes will continue to host Dundee emerging artists, designers, curators, activists, and organisers who sustain and support the grassroots sector in the city.

This podcast will be made and produced by Ryan McLeod. This event will be recorded. This event will also be live captioned

V&A Dundee's Young People's programme is funded by the Mathew Trust.

About the designers:

Lizzie Day is one half of Volk Gallery, a non-institutional arts venue based in Dundee, Scotland. Consisting of a repurposed mechanical vending machine, Volk Gallery is hung in the publicly accessible locale of the Keiller Centre. A rotation of products are dispensed at a set price of £3 each. Works are completed by commissioned artists and change (roughly) monthly. Lizzie is a Dundee based programmer and arts organiser working in non-traditional settings. She is currently Project Coordinator with UNESCO City of Design Dundee. Volk Gallery is a collaborative project, produced with Luke Cassidy Greer of Yalla Riso.

Robyn Scanlan runs City Flowers Garden Studio, a volunteer-led grassroots space located in the Keiller Centre. Originally a flower shop, the studio now hosts low-cost, accessible workshops, free exhibitions, and a small urban garden offering hands-on horticulture learning. For the past two years, the Garden Studio has provided environmental arts and horticultural activities inspired by urban planner and botanist Patrick Geddes and his “Think global, act local” philosophy. Robyn also delivers outreach to primary schools, eco and leadership groups, and community centres. Currently in a pilot phase, the Garden Studio is researching ways to best serve the Dundee community and surrounding areas while trialling sustainable approaches in a challenging financial and environmental climate.
