V&A Dundee are preparing to update visitors about the upcoming Dundee Design Festival opening at Michelin Scotland Innovation Parc next month, Monday 23 September.

Celebrating 10 years of Dundee’s status as the UK’s only UNESCO City of Design, Dundee Design Festival is Scotland’s largest design event and will run for a week from Monday 23 to Sunday 29 September.

With one month to go, a new ‘Design Dispensary’ has been installed at V&A Dundee to provide visitors with advance information about the design festival which is free to attend.

A series of four free zines have been created to promote the festival, providing an insight into the people, places and stories behind Dundee Design Festival 2024 and can now be picked up from the ‘Design Dispensary’ at V&A Dundee.

Produced by the festival’s writer-in-residence Sam Gonçalves and designer Martin Baillie, the zines cover a series of topics including an interview with designer Hannah Sabapathy and information about the festival’s aim to be the most sustainable design festival in the world.

Taking over 10,000sqm of space at Michelin Scotland Innovation Parc, the festival will host a week of free exhibitions, activities and installations and display work by over 180 designers, celebrating local, national and international design talent.

Committed to becoming one of the world’s most sustainable design festivals with a commitment to using no more than 30% of new materials, the festival has reused materials from V&A Dundee’s 2023 Tartan exhibition. Powered by clean and renewable energy, the festival team are encouraging visitors to travel to the festival with Ember, the UK’s first 100% electrical coach service.

Dundee’s 5th design festival is curated by Local Heroes founder Dr Stacey Hunter. Showcasing the diversity of design, the festival will recognise the many ways that designers and makers contribute to our world. Highlights include Hyper-Local: Objects from the UNESCO Design Cities Network, showing international design objects connected to the places they are from and FRAMEWORK, a snapshot of contemporary design in Scotland today.

Jack Reilly, Head of Visitor Experience at V&A Dundee said “The team at V&A Dundee are excited to share information about Dundee Design Festival with visitors coming to the design museum over the next few weeks. The free zines, now available from our Design Dispensary are a great way for people to find out more about the festival and are already proving very popular.”

Dr Stacey Hunter Dundee Design Festival Creative Director said: "We commissioned this series of Zines to give readers a taste of the things to come at this year's Dundee Design Festival. The festival's writer-in-residence Sam Gonçalves and graphic designer Martin Baillie have produced a series of booklets that introduce the festival through four themes, highlighting Dundee's design community, manufacturing heritage and sharing insights into design processes and outcomes. Together we hope they build anticipation for the festival and point the way from the V&A Dundee to Michelin Scotland Innovation Parc."

Dundee Design Festival 2024 is free to attend and takes place at Michelin Scotland Innovation Parc from Monday 23 September to Sunday 29 September.

Dundee Design Festival 2024 is delivered by UNESCO City of Design Dundee. UNESCO City of Design Dundee is delivered through the Dundee Partnership and hosted by V&A Dundee. The zines are printed on G . F Smith Colorplan paper provided as part of their sponsorship partnership with Dundee Design Festival.
