Creating Picture Books

Learn the fundamentals of creating children's picture books

From portfolio advice to industry insight, Dundee-based author and illustrator Natalie Russell will reflect on her design practice and answer the need-to-know questions about the rigorous process involved in writing and illustrating children’s picture books. Examples of her work will be available to view, from sketchbooks and texts to published books and prints.

You’ll also visit the Scottish Design Galleries for inspiration. Using our collection of objects, you’ll respond to an illustration design challenge - selecting, sketching, developing characters, refining narratives, storyboarding and creating your own sample spread.

Natalie Russell is a lecturer of Illustration at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, a Picture Hooks mentor and the author and illustrator of internationally published children’s picture books including Moon Rabbit, Home Sweet Hamish and Lost for Words.
