For this month’s Friday Late we had the pleasure of commissioning a new work from artist Le Gateau Chocolat, whose practice spans drag, opera, musical theatre, children’s theatre and live art. This piece, created with filmmakers 3000ceanHill, explores grief, our collective humanity, and the need to celebrate life.
‘Echoes’ is a performance film which, in the shadow of the pandemic, juxtaposes the melancholy of Henry Purcell’s aria ‘When I am Laid’ with a visual narrative representing joy, happiness and hope.
As a celebrated baritone as well as a gifted storyteller, Le Gateau Chocolat’s works have been presented across the globe. In the interview below, hear about Gateau’s unique journey into drag, the creative process, and how identity informs the creation of his art and performance.
Stay tuned for the next Friday Late commission. Keep up to date by joining our mailing list.
